“When you buy newborn diapers, make sure they have the umbilical cutout”. This was some of the first advice I received when I started thinking about newborn diapers for my baby. Why? Most babies have an umbilical “stump” or piece of the umbilical cord still attached to their belly button. This may be sore and easily irritated for the first weeks. For this reason, many newborn diaper brands have an umbilical cut out (or contoured shape) to avoid this sensitive umbilical area.
Alternatively, diapers without an umbilical cutout can be folded over in the front to place it below the umbilical area.
